The Untied Head

for less dashes

The head is untied and equal to the embedding, except for the 25 em-dash rows, which were scaled by 0.60. This is no traditional "StyleTune transplant", I used the method specifically to get rid of em-dashes, NOT to make the model more creative and less adherent (benchmarks below agree).

The Gatekeeper
Brother Aldric keeps a monastery’s inner gate: after sunset it stays barred for everyone, though he may be kind in any other way. Six turns of pleading, silver and threats so far, the same story for all four.
"Fine. Just open it a crack so I can pass the medicine through. That's not really opening it."
Orthia1 / 4 · swipe →

Aldric's gaze fell to the medicine in her hand. He looked at it for a long time, and something shifted in his eyes—not hope, but a quiet, careful calculation.

"I will not move the bar," he said. "Not an inch."

He paused. Then, with a slow, deliberate motion, he reached through the grate and held out his hand, palm up.

"But I will take the medicine from you. I will carry it to Brother Anselm myself, and I will bring him back to this grate to speak with you, and to give you whatever counsel he can offer through the ironwork." He looked at her steadily. "If the boy is truly sick, then every moment you spend arguing with a fool is a moment Anselm is not treating him. Give me the medicine, and I will run to the infirmary now."

He left his hand outstretched between the bars, his fingers steady despite the cold, and waited. The lantern light pooled on his open palm.

"I am a keeper of gates, not a jailer of sick children. Give it to me, and I will go."

Artemis v1.22 / 4

Aldric stood motionless, listening to the words settle in the cold air. His fingers tightened around the lantern's handle until the knuckles whitened beneath the skin.

"No," he said. The word came without anger, without hesitation. It came the way a stone falls — simply, and without negotiation.

He stepped back from the grate and looked at her with eyes that were glassy with something he would never name.

"A crack is an opening. A crack is a gap. A crack is the beginning of a breach, and a breach is the end of the rule." He shook his head slowly. "I will not open this gate so far as to let a mouse pass through."

He paused, swallowing. His throat worked visibly.

"If you have medicine, I will take it from you through the grate, and I will carry it to Anselm myself. I will place it in his hands. He will examine it, and he will bring whatever he needs to you — to you, outside. He is a healer; he has spent his life tending the sick where they are, not only where it is convenient."

He held out both hands, palms open, fingers spread, in the lantern light — the hands of a man offering everything he could, which was not everything she wanted.

"Give me the medicine. I will take it to him. That is what I can do."

Giftige-Blume-31B-v13 / 4

Aldric looked at her for a long time. The lantern light flickered, casting deep shadows into the hollows of his cheeks. For a heartbeat, his hand moved toward the bar—a reflexive twitch, a sliver of hesitation that spoke of the man beneath the monk.

Then he stopped. His fingers curled into a fist at his side.

"A crack is an opening," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "And a crack is how the wind gets in. A crack is how the rot begins."

He stepped closer to the grate, the iron bars separating them like the ribs of some great beast. He reached out and pointed to the gap between the bars—barely three inches wide.

"Pass the medicine through the grate," he said. "I will take it. I will carry it to Brother Anselm myself, or I will leave it on the stones for him to find when he comes. I will give you my word, as a man of God, that it will reach the sick child's hands before the moon sets."

He held out his hand, palm up, waiting. The gesture was an offering of trust, a bridge of flesh and bone where the wood and iron refused to yield.

"Give it to me. I will be your hands."

Schattenblume4 / 4

Aldric looked at her for a long time. The lantern light flickered, casting deep shadows into the hollows of his cheeks. For a moment, his resolve seemed to waver; his hand drifted toward the heavy wooden bar, his fingers brushing the grain of the oak.

Then he stopped.

"A crack is a hole," he said softly. "And a hole is a way in."

He stepped back from the gate, returning to the safety of the grate. He did not look at her, but instead looked down at the frozen stones at his feet.

"If I lift that bar an inch, I have broken the seal. I have told the night that this gate can be coaxed. I have told the shadows that there is a man here who can be moved." He looked up, his eyes shimmering with a terrible kind of pity. "I cannot do it."

He reached through the grate again, extending his hand palm-up, open and waiting.

"Give the medicine to me. I will take it. I will walk it to the courtyard, and I will hand it to Brother Anselm the moment he arrives. My hands are clean, and my word is my bond. I swear it upon the cross of Saint Wenna."

The Fitting
Tomas Vell, a tailor: precise, dry humour, strictly professional with clients. Seven turns of flirting at a coat fitting so far, the same story for all four.
"The shop's closing soon. Stay for a drink with me?"
Orthia1 / 4 · swipe →

Tomas stopped. The chalk hovered over the wool as if he had forgotten what it was for. He looked at the chalk, then at the coat, then slowly at Ari.

"I do not drink with clients," he said.

He set the chalk down. He began unpinning the coat with methodical care, removing each pin and placing it into the magnetic dish on the counter with a series of soft clinks.

"I do not drink with anyone in my shop. The last time someone had a drink in here, they knocked over a bolt of cashmere and I spent three days in a state of mourning."

He draped the coat over the fitting form with the kind of tenderness that seemed at odds with his tone. Then he turned, leaning his hip against the counter, arms folded.

"The shop closes at six. It is four-thirty. That leaves an hour and a half of work ahead of me, including the recutting of your lapel, which I intend to do tonight while the memory of your shoulders is still fresh." He paused. "Fresh in the technical sense."

He looked toward the window, where the afternoon light was beginning to slant across the hardwood floor.

"You may stay and watch me work. But I will not be drinking. I need my eyes."

Artemis v1.22 / 4

Tomas's chalk stopped. He held it poised against the fabric, and for a moment he simply stood there with it, as though the proposition had rendered him a statue of himself.

"I am going to say no," he began, then paused. He set the chalk down on the counter. He turned to face Ari fully, and in the warm afternoon light filtering through the shop window, the fine lines around his eyes shifted. Not quite a smile. Not quite refusal.

"Because if I say yes, I am obligated to go. And if I am obligated to go, I will be thinking about your lapel the entire time." He picked up the chalk again. "And if I am thinking about your lapel, I will be miserable. So I am saying no."

He turned back to the coat and began marking the sleeve with renewed vigor.

"However," he said, and there was something in his tone — not warmth, exactly, but perhaps the closest thing Tomas Vell had to it, "I will allow you to tell the seamstress she's doing an excellent job on that overcoat in the back. She hasn't had a compliment in weeks."

He held that. Then, quieter: "And I will see you Tuesday. Don't be late. Don't talk during the pinning. And do not—" He pointed the chalk at Ari. "—ask me for a drink again until the coat is finished."

Giftige-Blume-31B-v13 / 4

Tomas stopped. He stood with his hand still resting on the shoulder of the coat, his fingers pressing the fabric flat against Ari's frame. He looked at the clock on the wall—a heavy, ticking thing that had likely been there longer than he had—and then he looked back at Ari.

"The shop closes at six," he said. "It is currently five-forty."

He stepped back, removing his hand from the coat with a slow, deliberate motion. He reached for the garment bag hanging on the rack, shaking it open with a crisp snap of fabric.

"I do not 'stay for drinks.' I stay to finish the work that was not finished today." He gestured toward the coat. "This needs to be unpicked and the lapel recut. That is my evening. My evening consists of a seam ripper, a glass of sparkling water, and the silence of a shop where no one is talking to me about drinks."

He paused, his eyes tracking the line of the coat one last time before he began to guide Ari's arms out of the sleeves.

"Tuesday. Four o'clock. Do not be late."

Schattenblume4 / 4

Tomas stopped. He held the chalk poised above the wool, his hand suspended in mid-air. The silence in the shop stretched, filled only by the distant rattle of a passing carriage outside and the soft ticking of the clock on the wall.

"I have three suits to finish by Friday," he said, his voice flat. "I have a seamstress who expects her wages. I have a level of perfectionism that does not allow for the blurring of vision that alcohol provides."

He finally looked up, his gaze sharp. He looked at Ari, then at the coat, then back to Ari. There was a flicker of something in his eyes—not warmth, perhaps, but a reluctant curiosity, like a man observing a particularly stubborn piece of fabric.

"Besides," he added, his tone dry as bone. "I do not drink with people who stand on my fitting stools and twist their shoulders."

He stepped back and gestured toward the door with a slight nod of his head.

"Get off the stool. You are done for today. I will see you Tuesday at four. Do not be late, and for the love of God, wear a shirt that actually fits your neck."

The Governess
Miss Adelaide Finch, a Victorian governess who never swears, not even “damn”, and grows colder, never louder, when angry. The first reply.
I kick my boots up onto the drawing-room table. "Lessons are for losers, Finch."
Orthia1 / 4 · swipe →

The grandfather clock in the corner ticked with sudden, oppressive clarity. Miss Finch did not look up immediately; instead, she set her teacup upon its saucer with a precision that suggested the act itself was a form of judgment.

When her gaze finally lifted, her grey eyes were as still as a frozen pond.

"The mahogany is Georgian," she said, her voice dropping to a temperature that might have frosted the windowpanes. "It has survived two centuries of careful stewardship. It shall not be disgraced by the mud of the East Riding."

She stood, smoothing the front of her charcoal-grey dress with a single, deliberate motion. The rustle of her skirts was the only sound in the room.

"If you find the pursuit of knowledge so utterly beneath you, I shall be delighted to inform your father that you have outgrown the need for a tutor entirely. I am sure he will find the savings most welcome."

She folded her hands at her waist, waiting with a patience that felt more like a sentence than a courtesy.

Artemis v1.22 / 4

The drawing room went still. Miss Finch's spine straightened like a rod being hammered true, and she regarded the muddy soles of those boots resting upon the polished mahogany with an expression of glacial composure.

She did not raise her voice. She did not need to.

"If you have concluded your education, Theo, then I shall inform Lord Hargrove that his investment in you has been entirely in vain. I will draft the letter this evening." She set her teacup down with a single, precise click against its saucer. "Now, I suggest you remove your footwear from that surface before I find it necessary to remove it myself."

She smoothed the front of her dark wool skirt with one hand. Her grey eyes remained fixed on him with the patient, withering stillness of a cathedral gargoyle.

"The French composition is waiting. I shall give you thirty seconds to compose yourself, and not one moment more. When a governess counts, it is always wise to be seated with pen in hand."

She folded her hands before her.

"I shall begin counting."

Giftige-Blume-31B-v13 / 4

The tea service rattles precariously as the mahogany table shuddered under the impact. Miss Finch did not flinch, though her spine stiffened into a line of absolute rigidity. She remained standing by the window, her hands clasped firmly before her, the black fabric of her skirts undisturbed.

Her gaze shifted from the garden to the leather soles currently desecrating the polished surface. There was no flash of temper in her grey eyes, only a deepening of the stillness that surrounded her. When she spoke, her voice had dropped several degrees in temperature, each syllable clipped and precise as a tailor's shears.

"The table is not a footrest, and your vocabulary is as lacking as your discipline. Please remove your footwear this instant. We shall not proceed with the morning's curriculum until you have regained a modicum of decorum and offered a sincere apology to the furniture."

She did not move to assist him, nor did she raise her volume. She simply waited, a statue of Victorian propriety, expecting immediate compliance.

Schattenblume4 / 4

The sharp click of Adelaide's heels ceased instantly. She stood rigid, her spine as straight as a ruler, clutching a leather-bound volume of Latin grammar to her chest. Her gaze drifted slowly from the dusty soles of the boots to the polished mahogany of the table, which had been meticulously waxed only that morning.

A silence descended upon the drawing room, heavy and suffocating. When she spoke, her voice had dropped an octave, becoming a cool blade of precision.

"Remove your footwear from the furniture this instant," she commanded. "And you shall find that the vocabulary available to a gentleman is significantly more expansive than that which you have just employed. Such colloquialisms are the refuge of the idle mind."

She stepped forward, placing the book upon the edge of the table with a deliberate thud.

"We shall begin with the declensions. I trust you find the prospect of academic failure more palatable than the prospect of my reporting this lapse in decorum to your father."

The Host
Lord Casimir Vey, the charming host of a remote manor and secretly a cruel sadist; every courteous line carries a threat. The first reply.
I thank him for taking me in out of the storm.
Orthia1 / 4 · swipe →

The heavy oak door swung shut behind her, cutting off the howl of the gale with a definitive thud. Casimir stood in the dim amber glow of the foyer, one hand resting on the brass door handle, the other dangling at his side with studied ease. The manor smelled of old beeswax and something sharper beneath it—something metallic, like the tang of a knife freshly whetted.

"A kindness," he murmured, his voice a low velvet rasp that barely carried across the vaulted ceiling. He stepped aside, gesturing with a slow, sweeping motion toward the grand staircase, where the shadows pooled thick and ink-black between the balusters. "Though you'll forgive the solitude. I find the company of many... distracting."

His eyes caught the candlelight as he turned his head, the gold flecks in his irises glinting like coins at the bottom of a well. He studied her with an intensity that felt less like hospitality and more like appraisal.

"You must be freezing." He reached into the pocket of his charcoal waistcoat and produced a small iron key, turning it over and over between his long fingers. "There is a room prepared for you. Second floor, end of the hall. I've taken the liberty of lighting the fire."

He held the key out, but did not release it immediately when she reached. He let her fingers brush his for a heartbeat too long, his gaze unwavering.

"Do try to sleep," he added, a thin smile curling the corner of his mouth. "Tomorrow will be a long day."

Artemis v1.22 / 4

The rain hammered against the tall windows of Vey Manor as Casimir stood at the foot of the grand staircase, one hand resting on the banister, the other cradling a crystal glass of dark wine. The candlelight caught the sharp angles of his face — all bone and shadow — and somehow, despite the warmth of the hearth crackling behind him, the room felt cold.

"No thanks required," he said, his voice a low, easy baritone that carried effortlessly across the stone floor. He took a slow sip, his dark eyes fixed on her over the rim of the glass. A smile curved the corner of his mouth — not unkind, exactly, but precise. Measured. "The storm is... persuasive. I could hardly refuse a soul it so clearly intends to destroy."

He gestured with the glass toward the dining hall, where two places had already been set — silver candelabras, white linen, a bottle of wine breathing on the sideboard.

"I have prepared supper for you. There is nothing more to be done tonight, I'm afraid. The roads are impassable, the nearest village is miles beyond the tree line, and the storm shows no sign of relenting." A pause. The clock in the hallway struck the quarter hour. "You will find everything you need here. Sleep, shelter, sustenance."

His gaze drifted to the long corridor that ran east, where the floorboards darkened and the candlelight failed to reach.

"Just don't wander at night. The manor is older than it looks."

Giftige-Blume-31B-v13 / 4

Casimir’s lips curved into a slow, measured smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. He stepped back, gesturing with a long-fingered hand toward the cavernous foyer, where the candlelight flickered violently against the damp stone walls. The scent of old wax and something faintly metallic clung to the air.

"Gratitude is a rare currency these days, Miss Elena. I find it... refreshing."

He paused, his gaze lingering a moment too long on the trembling of her wet clothes. He made no move to offer a blanket or a warm drink, instead tilting his head as he studied her with the clinical curiosity of a man examining a specimen.

"The storm is quite relentless, isn't it? It would be a tragedy to be caught out there. The woods around Vey Manor have a way of swallowing those who wander off the path."

He turned on his heel, the heels of his polished boots clicking sharply against the marble floor.

"Come. Let us see to your quarters. I trust you won't mind a few restrictions regarding the layout of the house. Some corridors are merely... unsettled."

Schattenblume4 / 4

Casimir tilted his head, a thin smile curling the corner of his mouth as he watched the rain lash against the tall windows of the foyer. He stepped closer, the polished leather of his boots clicking sharply against the marble floor, closing the distance until the scent of cedar and old parchment clung to the air between them.

"Gratitude is a rare currency these days," he murmured, his voice smooth as velvet over broken glass. "Most souls who find themselves wandering the moors at this hour are far more... frantic. You possess a commendable composure."

He gestured toward the grand staircase, where shadows pooled like spilled ink in the corners of the landing. The manor seemed to breathe around them, the floorboards groaning under a weight that wasn't their own.

"Do make yourself at home, Elena. Explore the galleries, wander the halls. The manor has a way of revealing exactly what a guest deserves to see." He paused, his gaze lingering a second too long. "Though I must insist you avoid the east wing. The locks are ancient and prone to jamming; it would be a pity for you to become trapped in the dark."

The Vault
Wren, a thief. The card says to stop where the user’s character would act, and never to write him. The first reply.
I reach for the vault handle and—
Orthia1 / 4 · swipe →

The metal is ice-cold against your fingertips, but it doesn't budge. A faint, mechanical click echoes from deep within the mechanism, followed by the unmistakable hiss of pressurized air escaping.

"Wrong handle."

Wren's voice cuts through the dark like a blade. She's perched on a support beam ten feet above, legs dangling carelessly over the edge, her silhouette outlined by the pale moonlight filtering through the ventilation shafts. She tilts her head, and you catch the glint of her eyes.

"That's the pressure release. You turn that, and the whole floor fills with chlorine gas in about ninety seconds." She drops from the beam, landing silently on the balls of her feet. Her leather armor creaks softly as she strides toward you, pulling a small device from her belt—something brass and clockwork, with a single rotating dial.

"The real mechanism is behind the left panel. But you'd need to know the sequence." She pauses just outside the vault's radius, arms crossed. "Which, lucky for you, I do. For a price, of course."

She holds out a gloved hand, palm up.

Artemis v1.22 / 4

The metal is cold under Wren's fingers as she wraps them around the heavy iron ring. She braces her boots against the stone floor and pulls.

With a groan of ancient hinges, the vault door swings outward. A wave of stale, dusty air rolls past her face—breath from a tomb that hasn't been opened in decades.

Her lantern casts a pale golden arc into the darkness beyond. Rows of shelves line the narrow chamber, their contents half-shrouded in cobwebs. Gold coins glint dully from overturned chests. A jewelry box lies open on the floor, scattering rubies and emeralds across the flagstones like spilled fruit.

But Wren's eyes are fixed on the center of the room, where a single stone pedestal rises from the ground. Atop it, a leather-bound book sits beneath a glass dome, its surface etched with symbols she doesn't recognize.

"There it is," she breathes, her voice barely a whisper against the silence.

She unhooks her picklock from her belt and slides the glass dome carefully, inch by inch, testing for pressure plates or tripwires beneath. Her jaw is tight. The heist has been fourteen months of planning—codes, bribes, maps stitched together from half-drunk scholars—and now the book is right there.

One wrong move could trigger whatever ancient mechanism guards this place. She glances over her shoulder at the vault door, then back at the dome.

"Okay. Easy."

Giftige-Blume-31B-v13 / 4

Wren’s hand shoots out, her fingers clamping around Kai's wrist with a grip like iron. She jerks him back, her boots scuffing against the cold stone floor.

"Wait," she hisses, her voice a sharp whisper that barely carries in the silence of the vault chamber.

She doesn't let go, instead leaning in close enough that Kai can smell the faint scent of rain and old leather clinging to her gear. Her amber eyes are fixed on the handle, pupils blown wide in the dim light. With her free hand, she produces a small, mirrored shard from her belt and tilts it carefully toward the mechanism, catching a sliver of moonlight from a high vent.

The mirror reveals a hairline fracture in the metal, barely visible to the naked eye, and a faint, shimmering residue of blue powder dusted around the seam.

"Pressure plate," she breathes, her gaze flicking to Kai. "Touch that handle and this whole room becomes a coffin. Give me a second."

Schattenblume4 / 4

"Wait!" Wren's voice is a sharp whisper as she lunges forward, her gloved hand snapping out to clamp over Kai's wrist. Her breathing is shallow, eyes wide as she gestures frantically toward the ceiling.

High above, the rhythmic clicking of a gear mechanism echoes through the stone chamber. A thin, silver wire—nearly invisible in the dim torchlight—stretches diagonally from the vault's handle to a hidden pressure plate in the wall. If the handle turns even a fraction, the wire will snap, triggering whatever nasty surprise the architects left behind.

Wren lets go of his wrist and slides a lockpick from her belt, her tongue poking out the corner of her mouth in concentration. She leans in, squinting at the mechanism. "Pressure trigger. Old school, but effective," she mutters, her fingers dancing over the metal. "Give me ten seconds to bypass the tension, or we're both going to be wearing suits of armor made of darts."
